What ID Do I Need for a Notary Appointment in New Jersey?

Clear communication is the foundation of a proper notarization. Here is what you need to know to ensure your appointment is seamless.

When you book a mobile notary, the most important thing you can prepare is your identification. As a New Jersey Notary, I am legally required to verify the identity of every signer to prevent fraud and ensure the integrity of the document.

In New Jersey, a valid ID must be government-issued and contain a photo and a signature. The most common forms of acceptable ID include:

· A current Driver’s License (NJ or out-of-state).

· A US Passport or Foreign Passport (recognized by the US).

· A Government-Issued Non-Driver ID card.

What if my ID is expired?

In New Jersey, I can accept an ID that has expired, provided it expired within the last three years. If your ID expired longer ago than that, or if you have no photo ID at all, we may need to use "Credible Witnesses"—individuals who know you, have their own valid ID, and can swear under oath to your identity.

Always ensure the name on your ID matches the name printed on your legal documents. If there is a significant discrepancy (like a missing last name due to marriage), please let me know when booking so we can handle it properly.
